A mountaintop getaway of logs, fieldstone, shake roofs, and natural rock porches, this is a very unusual place—and we mean that as a compliment. The experience is very rustic, more like upscale camping. Dinner is served in a group setting, and you sleep on beds with delightful headboards made from sticks. At an elevation of 5,000 feet in the Great Smoky Mountains, the views can’t be beat. Rooms and cabins made of hand-hewn logs are decorated with antiques, regional artwork, and handmade quilts. Most rooms have a private balcony, a wood-burning stone fireplace, and a steam shower. The owners are delightful and engaging, and the staff are friendly and efficient. Breakfast includes pastries, omelets, and cider-simmered oatmeal; grilled sea bass and barbecue-glazed osso buco are two dinner entrées.
