KANSAS CITY, Mo. — About a dozen people protested against horse-drawn carriages on the Country Club Plaza Friday night.

“I think tonight was the perfect opportunity to get together with like-minded people and come out and make a stance,” said Holly Moore, who wants the horse-drawn carriages banned. “This isn’t a natural environment for horses to be in or any animal with city traffic, with all of the lights.”

The group stood on the Plaza on the same corner where people were paying for a carriage ride on Friday. Protesters said they hope they changed some people’s minds before they purchased a ticket.

Protesters held signs that said “say neigh to horse-drawn carriages” and “horse-drawn carriages are so last century.” The protest came nearly a week after a carriage accident on the plaza that injured five people. Witnesses said the horse took off running and crashed into a railing. They said someone flew out of the carriage and into the air.

While protesters said they want the carriages banned, other people said they think the tradition should stay.

“The fact that a horse was startled and injured several people is very unfortunate but it’s an isolated incident,” said Kyle Watson.

City inspectors said that KC Carriages has the proper licenses. FOX 4 has reached out to the owner of the company multiple times, but he has not returned our calls or emails.
