Matri-ARC
Women as creators within the arc of time

Curated by Marinelly Piñango & Jennifer Price

Lauren Betty • Alice Stone Collins • Maggie Davis • Lauren Merceron • Linda Mitchell • Marinelly Piñango • Corrina Sephora • Susan Ker-Seymer •
Morgan Auten Smith • Jessica Valderrama

Matri-ARC highlights the work of ten Georgia female artists, all at varying stages of their careers. This arc runs through the show as an allegory allowing the viewer to experience each artist at their point in the creative journey. The women ask different questions, seek different answers, and in doing so infuse their work with value, passion and life. All have claimed their own space allowing their work to evolve and flourish, creating a legacy of inspiration.

This exhibit is in conjunction with the Taking.Up.Space initiative; a grassroots, female-focused, community of global art exhibitions taking place in May 2022. The movement knits together the talent, capabilities and strength of female artists around the world. This convergence of talent stems from a web of connections that strengthens the work of the individual.

Dave Lasker: True Form

Utilizing design, form and shape, Dave Lasker creates decorative sculptures and functional furniture. Spruill Gallery was proud to present examples of both in True Form. During his creative process, Lasker says he often feels an “instinctive sense of expression. It may occur through bending a curve to draw a line, or carving and reshaping a form until the form feels true.”

Homecoming – New Works from Ilona Cutts

After recently becoming a US Citizen, Cutts has begun to put down roots and discover the illusive feeling of Home.  In her new body of work, Homecoming, Cutts explores this idea of Home and what it means to her and others.

Home doesn’t have to be an address or a physical place, home is what is in our hearts, a sense of belonging, a feeling of peace.     – Ilona Cutts

The Calmness in Cognition
A Visual Presentation by Acquille Dunkley

Through advances in technology, Dunkley is able to breathe new life into visual art with endless possibilities. Creating environments with full control over lighting, textures and colors, he is able to generate spaces where shadows and highlights become the sculptor of moods and emotions.

Fingerprints – Photographs from Kathryn Nee

Allowing the derelict and broken to have the final word, Nee gives voice to the silent. During her many travels, she documents the slow decline of abandoned buildings and sprawling industrial spaces, capturing the residue of humanity; the fading fingerprints of society and culture.

Questionable Origins: New Sculptural Work from Eileen Braun

Exhibition Dates: January 30 – March 14, 2020

For a virtual exhibit experience, watch the YouTube Series Origins of Eileen Braun: An Artist Speaks

Part I
Part II
Part III

Sculptor Eileen Braun conjures the skeletal hulls and germinating pods of an infant organism in her biomorphic forms. They appear before you suspended, reaching out mid-air, or as if propagating from the ground. Some cloaked in a suggestion of heavy metals, other rusted, and some entirely organic in nature. It is with closer inspection that we find these beings might not be as they seem.
