Two of Michigan’s premier getaways have been selected as the top two resorts in the Midwest.

Mackinac Island’s Grand Hotel and Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville finished No. 1 and No. 2 in the Readers’ Choice Award contest, which gathered responses from more than 600,000 Condé Nast Traveler readers across the globe.

“We are proud to announce Grand Hotel has been named the #1 Resort in Midwest in Condé Nast Traveler's 2019 Readers' Choice Awards,” Grand Hotel staff wrote on Facebook. “A special thank you to all our loyal guests for taking the time to vote for America's Summer Place.”

It’s the latest recognition for the Grand Hotel, the 133-year-old landmark that is a National Historic Landmark, and a member of Historic Hotels of America.

Opened on July 10, 1887 to receive summer vacationers who arrived by lake-steamer or by rail, the hotel and its breathtaking front porch is one island's most recognizable landmarks.

Throughout its history, Grand Hotel has hosted dignitaries from around the country and the world, including five U.S. presidents.

This is the third time in the last four years that Crystal Mountain has been recognized by Condé Nast Traveler. In 2015, Crystal was listed by the publication as the No. 1 US Resort for Family Reunions and then again in 2017 as one of the 10 Best Family Ski Resorts in North America.

“It is a tremendous honor to be alongside our friends at the Grand Hotel in receiving this recognition from Condé Nast and its readers,” said Chris MacInnes, president of Crystal Mountain. “Above all, this is a reflection of our dedicated staff and the incredible experience they provide our guests every day.”

Established in 1956, Crystal Mountain is a family-owned, four-season resort destination located 28 miles southwest of Traverse City and a short drive from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

The resort features lodging, dining, downhill and cross-country skiing, two championship golf courses, shopping, award-winning Crystal Spa, Michigan’s only alpine slide, the Park at Water’s Edge, Michigan Legacy Art Park and a conference center.

The full list of winners is published on Condé Nast Traveler’s website at www.cntraveler.com/rca and celebrated in the November issue of Condé Nast Traveler US and UK print editions.

Conde Nast is affiliated with Advance Publications, which owns MLive.
