GIVING NEWS

Remember our church with a year-end gift…to help retire the 2016 budget deficit. The deficit is due to a shortfall in the income we anticipated receiving this year, and is not due to expense over-run (in fact, expenses have been very well controlled!)

We began our appeal a week ago with a deficit of $63,000. Thanks to a few generous donors, that number is down to $45,000! Can you help reduce it further, and help bring it down to zero?

Any gift you can make will help your church end the year with a balanced budget, and your gift is tax deductible. To make a year-end gift, simply write “Year-End Gift” in the memo line of your check and mail it to the office or place it in the offering plate on Sunday.

These year-end gifts, of course, are in addition to your 2016 pledge and not in lieu of it. This is an excellent time to make sure your 2016 pledge is paid in full.

As always, we make this request with grateful hearts for the incredible generosity of our parishioners. Thank you for all you have given to our church, and thank you for being part of this wonderful, vibrant community of faith!

 CHRISTMAS CAROLING!

This year's caroling extravaganza is this Sunday, December 18th at 4 p.m.  As in past years, this is a kid-friendly event, but all are welcome. We will meet in the parish hall at St. John's.  Please bring flashlights and warm clothes.  After caroling, we'll come back to the parish hall for hot cocoa (we'll provide the cocoa!) and cookies.  If your last name starts with A-L, please bring cookies or something else to share if you can; if it starts with M-Z, this is your year off! RSVPs are helpful but not necessary -- to Mark Huey, 303-875-4844 or mark.huey@gmail.com.

COFFEE HOUR THIS SUNDAY, DEC 18TH TO HONOR EBRAHIM ASADISHAD

As previously announced, our beloved caretaker Ebrahim is leaving us at the end of the year to embark on a life of overseas travel with his wife Jode Brexa as she works in education research. You are invited to drop by coffee THIS SUNDAY and wish him well. You may also bring a card to church for Ebrahim that day or to the office before December 21st.
If you wish to bring a treat for coffee hour that day, please do so, and
thank you!

ADULT FORUM THIS SUNDAY, DEC 18TH ON MARY, MOTHER OF JESUS

Drop by coffee hour, convey your gratitude to Ebrahim, and then make your way to the Mckeown Conference Room/ Library for parishioner Paul Paiva's talk on Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Paul is a former Roman Catholic priest and we are excited that he will be sharing his knowledge of Mary and her significance to the church and the faithful. This is a very timely adult forum as we approach the Nativity of Our Lord.

Thank you!

Paul often affirmed members of the churches he shepherded by telling them he was thanking God for them. In Philippians 1:3-5 Paul writes, "I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now."

This week, the staff and leaders of St John's give thanks to God for those listed below, praying with joy that these good people are sharing in the work of the gospel in our parish.
  • Robert Schwartz & Christina Jennings for a great coffee hour
  • The Pastoral Care team for bagging and delivering cookies!
  • Everyone who donated cookies for the Christmas Cookie deliveries
  • The BHWI ladies who decorated Christmas Cookies
  • Pam White and the Sunday School Children for the beautiful Christmas ornaments

Deep and Heartfelt Thanks...

...to everyone who donated so generously to the 4th Annual Whittier Elementary Children's Book Drive. Thanks to you, nearly 150 low-income children each received a stack of books earlier this week (and 15 children who needed winter boots received them, thanks to your kindness). To give you a sense of what this means to them, here are a few of their responses:

A child said, "Could you help me untie the ribbon around this stack of books?"
[No honey, that ribbon is there to help keep them organized in your backpack.]
"But, I need to look at them so I can figure out which one to choose."
[Sweetie, you get to keep the whole stack!]
(The child was speechless, and wide-eyed.)

Another child said, "When do I need to bring these back?"
[You don't. They are yours to keep.]
"Oh! Wow! Really?"

Another child: "Is it okay if I write my name inside these books?"
[Yes dear, they are yours to keep forever.]
(Big, big smile.)

Some children recognized (our Faith Formation Director) Pam White from Reading Camp, and ran up to hug her, asking if they might come to camp again this year.

So you see, your donations really did make a profound difference in the life of some local children.
God bless you.

Isaiah 7:10-16

Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said: “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted.”

Psalm 80:1-7, 16-18

1 Hear, O Shepherd of Israel, leading Joseph like a flock; *
shine forth, you that are enthroned upon the cherubim.
2 In the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, *
stir up your strength and come to help us.
3 Restore us, O God of hosts; *
show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.
4 O Lord God of hosts, *
how long will you be angered
despite the prayers of your people?
5 You have fed them with the bread of tears; *
you have given them bowls of tears to drink.
6 You have made us the derision of our neighbors, *
and our enemies laugh us to scorn.
7 Restore us, O God of hosts; *
show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.
16 Let your hand be upon the man of your right hand, *
the son of man you have made so strong for yourself.
17 And so will we never turn away from you; *
give us life, that we may call upon your Name.
18 Restore us, O Lord God of hosts; *
show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

Romans 1:1-7
Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name, including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,
To all God's beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Matthew 1:18-25
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,”
which means, “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.
