Church Campus Security
With the never-ending stream of tragic and violent events in the world around us, I want to let you know that at St John's we are always looking at ways to maintain the security of our physical campus and assure our emergency response procedures are up-to-date.
Our call is to be good stewards of the lives and buildings entrusted to us, while continuing to welcome and serve anyone who comes here looking for help or spiritual sanctuary. In the weeks and months to come I'll offer you periodic updates on what we're doing. If you have questions or concerns, you are welcome to contact me or Father Ted. Peter Gilman is the vestry representative working with us, along with Tom Brewster.
Those who volunteer at Soup Kitchen will note that we're engaging an officer from Colorado Security Services to join us at this ministry. With the increasing number of families and children who serve at Soup Kitchen it makes sense to add a security officer whose role is to be a welcoming, yet watchful presence.
I am also hoping to launch a modest capital campaign later this spring, for several purposes, one of which would be an updated exterior door locking system. I'll offer more on that as it takes shape.

Lenten Services Schedule
Lenten Weekday Holy Eucharist: Begins Thursday, Feb. 15th and continues through Wed. March 28th. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at noon; Wednesdays at 10:00a.m.

Our Lenten series this year ponders the theodicy question, "How could a good God permit evil?" Jesus himself wondered this when he asked from the cross, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" The Rector's Pen will offer weekly distillations of the book "God of Our Silent Tears" by The Right Reverend Dan Edwards, Bishop of the Diocese of Nevada, along with discussion questions. Join us on Sundays in Lent as we work through this challenging material in small groups. On March 18th, Bishop Edwards will join us as our guest speaker.

Call For Diocesan Convention Delegates
We are looking for six delegates and three alternates to represent St John's at Diocesan Convention, Oct 25-27 in the Denver area. This is an especially important and historic convention as at it we will elect the next bishop of our diocese. At our Annual Meeting on Jan 28th I called for interested people to serve as delegates, and I'd like to issue the call again, to those of you who couldn't attend the annual meeting. Here are the qualifications for serving as a convention delegate:
* You must be a baptized Christian and confirmed Episcopalian, and a member in good standing of this church. That means you attend worship regularly, and devote a portion of your prayers and financial resources to support the church.
* You must be available to attend several meetings during the late summer and fall, as well as the bishop candidate walkabouts (some time between Oct 10 and 15), and the electing convention (Oct 25-27 as noted above).
The vestry and I will select six delegates and three alternates, and I'd like to put together a delegation that is demographically representative of our parish. If you are interested, please contact me by Feb 28th.

Travel Size Toiletries Needed
St. John’s cares for the clients at Soup kitchen each month by providing the best homemade meal in the city. St. John’s and St. Benedict’s Health and Healing Ministry also pass our travel size toiletries if the clients need them.
You may donate your small toiletries to St. John’s and SBHHM and we will see that the clients receive them at Soup Kitchen. There will be a box in the office to collect items.
Items needed are: toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, conditioner, hand lotion, and lip balms.

St. Benedict Health and Healing Ministry would like to invite you to our annual St. Benedict Benefit party and silent auction (formerly Heart Art) on February 24, 2018!
We are also seeking your generous auction donations for this crucial fundraiser. Some ideas for donations: time at your vacation home, ski condo or summer cabin; season tickets to any of the wonderful music, theatre or sports venues in Denver or other spots along the Front Range or perhaps you know of particular events in the season you will be missing and can donate those specific dates’ tickets; perhaps a lovely trip to a desirable destination; a beautiful piece of art that needs a new home; perhaps you own or are part of a business which could donate their particular services or products. If you are not familiar with St. Benedict Health and Healing Ministry (www.sbhhm.org for more info), it is a local non-profit which conducts numerous free medical clinics staffed with volunteer doctors, nurse practitioners and registered nurses in Boulder, Longmont, and Lafayette for uninsured and underinsured adults needing medical care. Our clinics are held at Trinity Lutheran Church, First Congregational Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, and Boulder Housing Partners in Boulder, OUR Center in Longmont and Sister Carmen Community Center in Lafayette.

Saturday Night Bluegrass Worship Service Our Saturday evening worship service begins each week at 5:00pm in the Chapel. Please join us for a contemplative Eucharistic service featuring Americana music with a bluegrass trio. Following the service, enjoy a brief concert and sing-along. This service lasts approximately 40 minutes. All are welcome!

Genesis 9:8-17
God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you-- not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.
Mark 1:9-15
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”
And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”
