Led by the Holy Spirit,
St. John's mission is to inspire people to grow into the heart and mind of Christ by engaging together in worshiping, serving, and spiritual formation.

STEWARDSHIP UPDATE FROM THE RECTOR:
The Ship is Setting Sail! Time to Get on Board!

To date our parish has raised $693,000 of the $890,000 we need to fund our 2017 budget.
The sail will be raised in church for the last time on January 15th.
The amount we have raised by that date will be the figure the vestry will use to determine final budget at their meeting on January 17th.
Please help your church raise its sail!
If you have not yet pledged for 2017, please do so today. If you are new to the parish, please know that we count on everyone pledging so we can responsibly budget for the year ahead.
Your pledge is vitally important to the continued health of this parish. If St John's worship and programs are important to you, then please pledge to support them financially in 2017. Tell us how much you can commit to giving the church in the year ahead.

St John's receives no money from the diocese and has no endowment. Every dollar spent comes from generous and faithful people like you. If you have pledged for 2017, thank you again! If you have not yet pledged, my prayer is that the Spirit moves in you and calls forth great generosity and commitment to this wonderful faith community.

You can pledge online at our website under the Stewardship tab or call in your pledge to Diane in our office at 303-442-5246, or email it to her at dwells@stjohnsboulder.org.

Blessings,
Grace and peace,
Susan+

GIVING  NEWS

Remember our church with a year-end gift…to help retire the 2016 budget deficit. The deficit is due to a shortfall in the income we anticipated receiving this year, and is not due to expense over-run (in fact, expenses have been very well controlled!)

We began our appeal a week ago with a deficit of $63,000. Thanks to a number of generous donors, our deficit has been reduced to $33,575! Can you help reduce it even further, and help bring it down to zero?

Any gift you can make will help your church end the year with a balanced budget, and your gift is tax deductible. To make a year-end gift, simply write “Year-End Gift” in the memo line of your check and mail it to the office or place it in the offering plate on Sunday.

These year-end gifts, of course, are in addition to your 2016 pledge and not in lieu of it. This is an excellent time to make sure your 2016 pledge is paid in full.

As always, we make this request with grateful hearts for the incredible generosity of our parishioners. Thank you for all you have given to our church, and thank you for being part of this wonderful, vibrant community of faith!

VESTRY NEWS

At our Annual Meeting on January 29, 2017, the congregation will vote for three new vestry members. We are fortunate to have nine parishioners who are interested in serving on the Vestry for the next three-year term. The candidates for consideration are:

Eli Dudok

Member Since:  2011; Received in December 2012.
Personal:  In November 2015, I was lucky enough to marry my high school sweetheart and friend of 20 years, Heather, at St. John’s. We both hail from Baltimore, MD. Together we are raising two dogs.
Professional:  Having many years of experience with the corporate property management world, I recently transitioned into a role in a local non-profit affordable housing organization. Sleep comes easier knowing that I get to have a direct part in providing homes for those who need them.
Why do you wish to serve on the vestry: I feel called to a life of service and have spent a lifetime serving various ministries in and out of church: Serving on the St. John’s vestry would be a humbling education on all that it takes behind the scenes to allow our faith community to usher God’s will into the world.
What qualities or skills do you bring to vestry service: Years of experience in community building in my professional and extra-curricular experiences: Heather and I served as delegates to the Global Episcopal Mission Network Conference in May, 2016. At, St. John’s I have participated in Tap House Theology, Young Adult Bible Study, Young Adult Intercessory Prayer Team, Taize Pine Ridge Pilgrimage of Trust, and served as a missionary to Matlosane, South Africa. This year I had the opportunity to serve as a lay delegate at the Annual Convention and to become a licensed Eucharistic Visitor.
What dreams do you have for our parish:  I love our God and I love our parish. Seeing the two work together in harmonious concert is my dream. We have been individually called to this wonderful place and this joint service work of sharing the love of God from our corner in Boulder. My hope is to do my part in helping keep our community as a place that is 1) rooted firmly in our relationship with our Creator, 2) well equipped to both physically, mentally, and spiritually share the Good News, and 3) financially healthy so we can continue to do our work for generations to come.
Hobbies: My wife and I share a passion for cooking and baking from scratch. In addition, I enjoy hiking, writing letters, and playing with our dogs.

Phil Ecklund
I was Baptised and Confirmed at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Edina, MN. Moved to Boulder for my Freshman year at UCB. Took a break to attend USAF pilot training, gain instate tuition, returned to UCB for my Sophomore year. Flew with the Colorado Air National Guard for ten years which covered tuition and cost of living. I graduated in Economics while on active duty during the Vietnam War.
Junior year I was hired by a major airline. I retired after 26 years. I lived this whole time in Boulder until Robin my wife of 36 years and I moved to Longmont last year.  Our three children and five grandchildren live in Boulder and Broomfield. I attended St. John's when I first arrived as a student.  I also surveyed several other churches, synagogues, fellowships, student organizations during my search for meaning and religious connection. Along the way I joined St. John's and transferred my membership from St. Stephens about the time I began serving St. John's as a LEM (Lay Ecumenical Minister, trained by Father François de Chardesnes.) I also served on a fall fundraising committee and performed other additional duties. I have a ministry talking and eating with homeless and panhandlers in Boulder. I currently race a small sailboat at the Union Reservoir, kayak, flight instruct in power and glider aircraft, ski, hike Mt. Sanitas, serve as a Boulder County Volunteer Naturalist and feed Belgian Horses at the County Macintosh/Lohr Farm.

Reynold Ruslan “Ren” Feldman

Born in New York City, I graduated from boarding school in New Jersey (Peddie) and received three degrees in English from Yale (B.A., M.A., and Ph.D.). My career included a full professorship and 19 years of administrative experience as a director, dean, academic vice president, and system-wide associate director of international programs. I’ve also been a foundation and nonprofit consultant, national higher-education consultant, nonprofit executive, professional fundraiser, tutor, editor, and author of ten published books. I am currently part-time development director for a veterans-serving nonprofit. A cradle Jew, I was baptized 50 years ago; then spent 37 years as a Lutheran (ALC, ELCA), seven as a Roman Catholic, and the last six as an Episcopalian. I have also practiced Sufi moving meditation for 56 years. At St. John’s I’ve been active in adult education, Men’s Bagels and Bible, the Healing Prayer Ministry, Solas, the Intentional Community, and, recently, ushering. An amateur linguist, I speak six languages besides English. I would be honored to draw on my diverse background as a new Vestry member.

JoAnne Foster
I am a native Coloradoan (my.great-great grandmother came here in 1874 from Cornwall, England) and a cradle Episcopalian. I was raised in Denver; early church at the Cathedral; and later at The Church of the Ascension.  I married Bob Foster, an educator and coach in 1959.  We had three children and now have six wonderful grandchildren. Bob passed away January 2010.  In addition to being a wife and mother I spent 25 years in education as a teacher and counselor.  I was privileged to be a CASA (court appointed special advocate for abused and neglected children) in Boulder County for 16 years. Since joining St. John's in 2010 I have been an usher,  a Foyer member, contributed to Pastoral Care Team, work  in the   Soup Kitchen, and manage  the kitchen for Reading Camp in June.  In my professional and volunteer life I had a reputation of being organized, efficient, a great team member, and loving what I did.  As a Vestry member I would carry these assets forward and assist in the furthering the mission of St. John's.

Wayne Grider
I am a Colorado native, have been happily married to Kathi, whom I met at Colorado State University, for 43 years. I have two sons and five grandchildren and we are fortunate to spend a good deal of time with them. Three live locally and two are in Seattle.
Kathi and I have been attending St. John’s for the last year and a half. I was raised an Episcopalian and served on the Vestry of the Church of the Transfiguration, the Episcopal church in Evergreen CO. We currently help with St. John’s monthly Soup Kitchen and are new members of the Pastoral Care Team. We both find St. John’s to be a wonderful place for spiritual growth and a caring community of people. It is a place of open minds and hearts. We have found all the clergy to be very gifted and inspiring to us.  In this time of challenge and opportunity within our community, the nation and the world St. John’s offers me a message and place to be grounded and comforted.
I spent 43 years in senior management roles in corporate and non-profit organizations and retired last year. I now spend my time with activities at St. John’s and some other non-profit organizations listed below. I hike regularly, am an avid reader, bike and run as well as enjoy travel.
I have a B.S. Degree in Psychology (Colorado State University) and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration (University of Colorado, Colorado Springs). I spent much of my career working with and on teams and committees. I am very collaborative in my style and focus on listening openly to all points of view and a team player.

Kathe Lujan
Hello, I'm Kathe Lujan, and I would welcome the opportunity to serve on the St. John's vestry. I am a cradle Episcopalian, and with the exception of a few rebellious years in the 70's, I have attended the church for most of my life. My husband Charlie and I joined St. John's in 1999, after 19 years at St. Aidan's. Throughout the years, I have always been a choir member, and volunteered for/participated in Vacation Bible School, youth group, dinner groups, and two years on the St. John's finance committee, serving under Father Rol.
For 17 years I was the business manager/Executive Director for The Ars Nova Singers. I have also served on the Board of Directors of Ars Nova, and was lucky enough to sing with the group for several seasons. Prior to the Ars Nova years, I held administrative positions in banking/trusts, real estate management, and patent law. I also volunteered for several years at both the Longmont and Boulder Valley Humane Societies.
At this point in my life, my main 'career' is babysitting my granddaughter a couple days a week...but I still have time for my other interests, quilting, yard care, our two cats. Charlie and I currently live in Lafayette, and
have two grown daughters, both of whom were youth group and children's choir members here at St. John's. Thank you for your consideration.

Linda Morgan
Bill and I came to St John’s in 1997, Fr. Rol was the Priest at the time.  We have been members ever since and just love church and its’ people.  We have organized the Usher Ministry for over 10 + years…I’ve lost count. I have a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Design from the LaSalle University in Illinois with a minor in business.  Throughout our 46 years of marriage we have had the opportunity to live in many different areas of the US.  This has provided me with career opportunities in retail, from managing small boutiques to regional retail manager over several stores.  I have also been a buyer and an account executive for two major cosmetic companies.
I am currently on the management staff at Nordstrom, Flatiron Crossing. I have been told that my leadership style is creative, positive, and motivational.

Allen White
Allen White and his wife, Pam, have been members of St. John’s since their move to Colorado in 1992. They have three grown children -- Jeffrey, Laura, and Kaitlin -- and a new granddaughter, Karleigh. Allen was brought up in the Congregational Church in suburban Boston but was confirmed     in the Episcopal Church shortly after attending his first service at St. John’s with his wife and children.
Through the years, Allen has served St. John’s as a Sunday school teacher, usher, and general assistant to the Director of Children’s Ministries/Director of Faith Formation (a.k.a. Pam!). He has also been on the youth advisory committee and on two discernment committees at St. John’s. While the Whites were on their brief leave to the Santiago mission church in Lafayette, Allen served as their treasurer and as a member of the bishop’s committee.
Allen is a research meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Boulder. In his spare time, Allen plays the piano, hikes, swims, and plays racquet sports, golf, and bridge. (For many years, Allen taught members of the St. John’s congregation to play bridge, and he and Pam continue to play with some of those students who are now treasured friends!)
For Allen and Pam, St. John’s has been – and continues to be – a worship community where they find traditional liturgy, beautiful music, and the loving support of friends. It is vitally important to them that St. John’s remain an open, affirming, inclusive congregation. As a member of the vestry, Allen would work to encourage volunteerism and stewardship, strengthen our children’s and youth programs, and ensure that St. John’s remains a leader in community outreach and social justice.

Thank you!

Paul often affirmed members of the churches he shepherded by telling them he was thanking God for them. In Philippians 1:3-5 Paul writes, "I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now."

This week, the staff and leaders of St John's give thanks to God for those listed below, praying with joy that these good people are sharing in the work of the gospel in our parish.

  • Thank you to Paul Paiva for his December 18th Adult Ed session on the Virgin Mary

Isaiah 42:1-9

Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness,
I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.

Psalm 29
1 Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, *
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his Name; *
worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters;
the God of glory thunders; *
the Lord is upon the mighty waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice; *
the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendor.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; *
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon;
6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, *
and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord splits the flames of fire;
the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; *
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
8 The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe *
and strips the forests bare.
9 And in the temple of the Lord *
all are crying, "Glory!"
10 The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; *
the Lord sits enthroned as King for evermore.
11 The Lord shall give strength to his people; *
the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace.

Acts 10:34-43
Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ--he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Matthew 3:13-17
Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”
