THIS WEEK’S PRAYER FOR STEWARDSHIP

Lord, during our fall pledge campaign when we seek to fill the net so that we might be fed and feed others, please help us to pray: God you are our beginning and our end. You know our resting places on the journey and are acquainted with all our ways. You know the paths we choose and those from which we turn away. You are our ever-present companion and our guiding star. It is in the darkness that you shine most clearly before us. Give us the eyes to see where you are leading us, and the courage to follow where you lead. Help us to live faithfully, from a place of generosity and not fear. With gratitude we pray. Amen.

THIRD QUARTER FINANCIAL NOTES

Friends in Christ,

Third quarter statements are going out this week, and you may receive a note with yours that says you're behind on your pledge payment. We are 75% of the way through the year and everyone who has fulfilled 60% or less of their pledge to date is receiving a gentle reminder note.

Why are we doing this? Last December, we found ourselves $64,000 short of projected income, and the primary reason was that many pledges had not been paid in full. So we scrambled, asking parishioners for extra money to help cover the shortfall. That kind of reactionary fund raising is not ideal, and I promised the vestry and finance committee that in 2017 I would do a better job of reminding people throughout the year if their pledge payments were falling behind.

If you receive a reminder note, please receive it with grace and know that we are simply trying to do the best we can to manage well the resources that have been entrusted to us. If you are in fact behind, we ask that you do your best to bring your pledge current. If you think our records are in error, call or email us. Diane is away October 6th-22nd, but in her absence Heather and I will do our best to note the discrepancies you might find and Diane will gladly help you upon her return.

We are so grateful for your faithful support of this church.
Thank you,
Bless you,
Susan+

HELP FILL THE NET!

Our fall pledge campaign launched on Oct. 1st and will run through November. This is the season when through pledges we raise the money to operate our church for the year ahead. You'll see that the beautiful boat is back on the wall in church, this year sporting a fishing net hanging over the side. The theme of this year's pledge campaign is HELP FILL THE NET. Jesus was all about feeding people and as his church, so are we. We spent some time in church on Sept. 24th talking about how we are spiritually fed through the programs, worship, and people of St John's, and we'll keep talking about that during the pledge campaign.

The more money we raise, the more our church can continue to be a place of spiritual nourishment. For every pledge, we'll put a stuffed fish in the net. Last year 281 households pledged. This year I'd like to exceed that. Last year we raised $712k in pledges. We can exceed that as well. Each week we'll give you the updated totals, and each week as pledges come in we'll put more fish in the net. I trust that by the end of this campaign, that net will be so full of fish that we'll be able to continue being a place where everyone is spiritually fed by God and where we are able in turn to spiritually feed the community.

You'll also see some paper fish hanging from nets on the stone pillars. These represent ways you've told us you are fed by God in this place. If you'd like to fill out a fish, please take one from the basket in the aisle when you return to your seat from Communion. Write down how God feeds you here and either hang it on the pillars or leave it in the pew and we'll hang it for you.

For all you have done to help St John's be a place of spiritual nourishment and refreshment, thank you, and for all you will do this coming year, thank you again.

With gratitude,
In Christ,
Pastor Susan

Dear St John's Parishioners,

In light of the Las Vegas massacre, I invite you to join St John's Gun Violence Prevention Rapid Response Network (RRN). Most of our work is done at the state level where I am provided Talking Points on controversial gun bills by Colorado Faith Communities United (CFCU) and I then ask you to write or call the appropriate committee members to discuss that bill.   So this is legislative work and it begins in January with the opening of the 2018 Colorado General Assembly. If you would like to join St John's RRN, please send me an email at kathleen687@comcast.net.
I also ask you to pray for the victims and families who suffered such great loss in the massacre and for the first responders and Good Samaritans who had the courage to rescue the injured under gun fire.
And now a short prayer:
" Please Holy Spirit, hear our prayers and bless our actions as we join you in working for peace in the world."
Peace in Christ,
Kathy Ashworth

Seeking Baby Jesus
Believe it or not, our annual Christmas pageant is fast approaching (December 10th), and we do not have anyone at St. John's (that I know of) who has or is expecting a baby to play Baby Jesus! Baby Jesus has always been played by a real, live baby.

Do any of you have friends or family with a baby who will be 1-3 months old in December who might be interested in participating in the pageant?  Their older children would also be welcome.

If you know of someone, please let me know!

The human soul is hungry for beauty: we seek it everywhere---in nature, music, art, clothes, gardening, our homes, companionship, love, spirit, and  ourselves. When we experience the Beautiful, there is a sense of homecoming. To participate in beauty is to come into the presence of the Holy.

As we enter autumn and its glorious beauty we welcome you to come to Solas on October 15 at 7 pm at St. John's.  We offer musicians, a storyteller, a walkabout with artistic activities, healing prayer, breaking of bread and pouring of wine, conversation in sharing appetizers.  Contact Barbara Dumke at 303-579-3242 or barbaraanndumke@yahoo.com or call St. John's at 303-442-5246 or the church's website www.stjohnsboulder.org.

Thank you!

Paul often affirmed members of the churches he shepherded by telling them he was thanking God for them. In Philippians 1:3-5 Paul writes, "I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now."

This week, the staff and leaders of St John's give thanks to God for those listed below, praying with joy that these good people are sharing in the work of the gospel in our parish.

  • Thank you to Kaitlyn Knudsen for her help in the Nursery.
  • Thank you to Mark Biggers and the Eagle's Nest for a great First Sunday Soup Kitchen.
  • Thank you to Dorothy Whitehouse for all our her help at St. John's over the past few weeks.

Isaiah 5:1-7

Let me sing for my beloved
    my love-song concerning his vineyard:
My beloved had a vineyard
    on a very fertile hill.
He dug it and cleared it of stones,
    and planted it with choice vines;
he built a watchtower in the midst of it,
    and hewed out a wine vat in it;
he expected it to yield grapes,
    but it yielded wild grapes.
and now, inhabitants of Jerusalem
    and people of Judah,
judge between me
    and my vineyard.
What more was there to do for my vineyard
    that I have not done in it?
When I expected it to yield grapes,
    why did it yield wild grapes?
And now I will tell you
    what I will do to my vineyard.
I will remove its hedge,
    and it shall be devoured;
I will break down its wall,
    and it shall be trampled down.
I will make it a waste;
    it shall not be pruned or hoed,
and it shall be overgrown with briers and thorns;
    I will also command the clouds
that they rain no rain upon it.
    For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts
is the house of Israel,
    and the people of Judah
are his pleasant planting;
    he expected justice,
but saw bloodshed;
    righteousness,
but heard a cry!

Psalm 80:7-14
7 Restore us, O God of hosts; *
show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.
8 You have brought a vine out of Egypt; *
you cast out the nations and planted it.
9 You prepared the ground for it; *
it took root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered by its shadow *
and the towering cedar trees by its boughs.
11 You stretched out its tendrils to the Sea *
and its branches to the River.
12 Why have you broken down its wall, *
so that all who pass by pluck off its grapes?
13 The wild boar of the forest has ravaged it, *
and the beasts of the field have grazed upon it.
14 Turn now, O God of hosts, look down from heaven;
behold and tend this vine; *
preserve what your right hand has planted.

Philippians 3:4b-14

If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.
Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 21:33-46

Jesus said, “Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they treated them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance.” So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the harvest time.”
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the scriptures:
‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is amazing in our eyes’?
Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom. The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.”
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they realized that he was speaking about them. They wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowds, because they regarded him as a prophet.
