VESTRY NEWS
Due to job changes/new jobs and resulting unforeseen work commitments, Eli Dudok and Steve Clarke are unable to complete their respective vestry terms and as such will be stepping down from vestry effective January 2019. In these cases, our parish by-laws permit the vestry to appoint people to fill the remainder of the terms on the seats being vacated. The vestry appointed Wayne Grider (whose term is up in 2019) to complete the remaining one year of Eli's term (2019-2020). The vestry appointed Vanessa Thorsten to complete the remaining two years (2019-2021) of Steve Clarke's term. Eli and Steve have been wonderful vestry members; when you see them please thank them for serving. Please also join us in welcoming Vanessa to the vestry, and in thanking Wayne for serving one more year! The three people you will elect in January will comprise the vestry class of 2022!

A SPECIAL ADVENT CHORAL COMPLINE THIS SUNDAY
The fruit of Silence is prayer. The fruit of Prayer is faith. The fruit of Faith is love.

Join us this Sunday, December 2nd at 9:00 pm. The Compline Choir of St. John’s will sing these wonderful words of Mother Teresa, set to very music by Latvian composer Peteris Vasks. The service will include Responses by Anthony Piccolo, hymns, psalms, and meditative improvisations by pianist John Boggs.
The sanctuary is dark and quiet; there are candles, but no cell phones, no responses to have to follow, no preaching. The Choral Compline service is short: just 35-40 minutes. People are free to sit on the floor, sit up around the altar, or even lie down and allow the music to wash over them. It is a come-as-you-are experience of the presence of God, through music and prayer, using the beauty of our liturgy. It is a sacred space for people at the end of their weekend, before the busy-ness of the week.

Get Ready for the St. John's Christmas Pageant
Our Annual Christmas pageant will be Sunday, December 9th at the 9:30 am service. The pageant is one of St. John's beloved traditions, and it's something your children will remember forever.
Rehearsal and costume distribution for lead parts will be on the day before, Saturday, December 8th, at 10 am. Children who want major parts (Mary, Joseph, Gabriel, the star, and three kings) must attend rehearsal.
Parts will be assigned by age with the older children choosing first, by 10:10 am. If your child wants a major part, please be at rehearsal by that time.
Angels and shepherds of all ages can pick up their costumes at 8:45 am on Sunday, December 9th, the morning of the pageant.

COOKIE BAKERS NEEDED
Pastoral care elves need cookie bakers and sweet treat makers for annual Christmas cookie bag deliveries to parish members unable to worship with us during our Christmas season. You may bring your cookie donation to the St. John's office on Wednesday, Dec. 5th or Thursday, Dec 6th during regular business hours or deliver your goodies to the to parish hall at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8th.

St. John's Christmas Caroling
Attention! Mark your calendars for our Parish-wide
Christmas Caroling event on Saturday, December 22nd at 4 pm.
We will meet in the Parish Hall at St. John's to enjoy cocoa and cookies.
Please bring flashlights and warm clothes and your Christmas Cheer. We will be caroling the local Whittier neighborhood this year.

St. John’s Whittier Pantry
Thank you to parishioners of St. John's for your help in stocking the Whittier Pantry!!! We opened on September 6th and had 7 families come. We will host up to 30 families this school year. We appreciate your donations of items or of checks (with Whittier Pantry in the memo).
Current needs: men's and women's deodorant, size 5 and 6 diapers.

Whittier Elementary Children need Coats.
The Whittier Pantry is collecting gently used clean children's coats. Any size that would fit an elementary or middle school child will be repurposed and loved by another child. As you are cleaning out your closets preparing for winter, keep this in mind. Coats may be dropped off at the Whittier pantry. Thank you so much.

More than 2000 years ago Mary and Joseph risked everything to escape to Egypt because their baby, Jesus, was in danger of being murdered by a violent leader. Today, thousands of families are escaping their home countries because they too feel their lives are threatened by violence and corruption.
In our Baptismal vows, we promise to, “seek and serve Christ in all persons”....”loving {our} neighbors as {ourselves}”...” and respect the dignity of every human being”. Since the beginning of our nation, Americans have been blessed to be able to welcome and comfort law-abiding people who seek only the chance to live in peace and in safety for themselves and their families.

Jeremiah 33:14-16
The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: "The Lord is our righteousness."
Psalm 25:1-9

let me not be humiliated,

How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith.

Luke 21:25-36
Jesus said, "There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in a cloud' with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."
Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
"Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."
