Capital Campaign Update

The rector and vestry are pleased to announce that $245,125 in pledges have come in for the Capital Campaign. Thank you to everyone who has joyfully and generously stepped forward to help so far! At its June meeting, the vestry voted to designate the chapel bathroom remodel, sanctuary roof repairs, and the new exterior door security system as first priorities. The next priority on the list is interior first and second-floor education wing partitions and doors to separate the classrooms from the common hallways of the church. The next priority after that is the roof extension over the walkway on the east side of the sanctuary.

You can help your church be able to do ALL of these projects as part of Phase One of the campaign by making a pledge or giving a gift prior to July 31st, 2018. On that date, we'll cease capital campaign fundraising for this year and do those projects we have raised the funds to do. You can give by:

+ Writing a check to St John's with "capital campaign" in the memo line
+ Emailing Pastor Susan or Senior Warden Joanie Heard with your pledge [sspringer@stjohnsboulder.org or joanieheard@me.com]
+ Fill out a pledge card (available in the narthex, in the office, and in the chapel)

If you wish information on the campaign in addition to what was supplied in the late May mailing from our wardens, or if you didn't receive that information, please contact Pastor Susan or Joanie Heard. We'll be happy to answer your questions!

           VASES NEEDED

The St. John’s Pastoral Care Team is asking for donations of vases for the delivery of altar flowers to our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. You can bring your vases to the office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays from 9am-noon, and from 1pm to 4pm.

The St. John's Altar Guild needs helpers for our 7:30 am Sunday Service. This is a blessed ministry, where we get to prepare God's table for Communion. Men and women, who can spare time out of their busy schedules are welcome to give this ministry a try.

An Episcopal Church needs an ACTIVE Altar Guild in order to serve the congregation. Due to illness, many of our members cannot continue to serve in the same capacity. So, we are asking for help to allow St. John's to continue to be the wonderful church that it is.

If you are interested, please contact:
Deacon Lorine Williams lorineafrica31@gmail.com,
Dorothy Whitehouse Ddechadenedes@comcast.net,
or Peggy Lemone lemone@ucar.edu.

Coffee Hour

THANK YOU to everyone who has volunteered over many Sundays to make Coffee Hour Fellowship happen. From setting up, to making coffee, providing goodies, and cleaning up, you have helped create a wonderful, warm, welcoming experience for everyone. We've decided to make Coffee Hour a bit less complicated for the summer Sundays. We'll still have coffee and lemonade, but the goodies are going on vacation until August 26th. Please join us after the 9:30 service for liquid refreshment!!

Dear Parents,

I'm writing to invite you and your family to consider becoming involved in the Acolyte Guild. Children who are at least 9 years old (who will turn 9 by this fall) and older are eligible to participate as acolytes at St John's at any of the 9:30 am services. We offer training, vestments, and loving support. Children learn new skills, make new friends, and learn to work as part of an inter-generational team, while having fun, growing in faith and maturity, and gaining a sense of purpose.

I watch our acolytes grow in confidence and poise as they serve and it's a wonderful thing to see. I also see the beautiful seeds of faith that are planted--ones whose sprouting and fruiting will continue to happen throughout the child's life.

New acolytes are shepherded by older, more experienced acolytes, as well as by adults, and there is plenty of opportunities to try out different roles. If your child is curious but a little shy to start out on his or her own, we offer opportunities for parents to participate in shepherding as well.

During two Second Sunday services, I will offer children a special behind-the-scenes look at what acolytes do. Your child will see what happens in the sacristy (the vesting room) before worship and then sit on the chancel (the area where the choir sits) with me during the service to watch what takes place from an up-close vantage point, and learn about what it is acolytes do.

If you'd like to check out this great ministry, simply come to the chapel at 9:00 am on Sunday, July 8th, or September 9th and we'll orient your family, and then head to the sacristy and chancel!

Blessings to you,
Grace and peace,

Have you ever felt like you know in your heart and soul that you are called to something, the question is WHAT? Have you ever wanted to explore your faith with a safe and supportive community? Have you ever wanted to read the Bible without feeling frustrated by the language? If you answer yes to these and many other questions about Christianity we have a place for you. Education for Ministry (EfM) is a 4-year curriculum that develops you into a theologically informed, reflective, and articulate person of God who is prepared to listen for and respond to God’s call. EfM helps you discover and exercise your varied gifts for ministry where you live and work. And the best news is that you only sign up for one year at a time, which consists of 36 weekly meetings. There isn’t a four-year commitment.

The EfM group at St. John’s meets every Tuesday evening from 7:00 – 9:00 starting in September (this year it starts September 4th) and going through May. If you are interested in exploring what EfM has to offer or are ready to sign up for the next year, we are accepting new members now through July 23rd. Please contact either EfM mentor Anne Skamarock (anne@skamarock.net - 720-201-4490) or David Plume (David.Plume@tetratech.com - 303-437-7977) to get more information or to sign up.

An Invitation to Take Action

As a social justice-minded Episcopalian and member of St. John's, I and others who have worked in early childhood wrote the following letter intended for members of the US Senate. I wish to share it with those of you who may be interested. Senator Bennett has signed the Keep Families Together Act, and Senator Gardner has not as of this writing. I am adapting it to send to other representatives and members of the DOJ. I would like to invite you to copy and edit it so that it reflects your voice and send it to your representatives. Or, you may wish to write your own letter.

Thank you so much for caring about this issue.

If you wish to sign a petition in lieu of, or as well as, writing a letter, parishioner Kathy Ashworth offers the following...

Dear St. John's Parishioners,

I signed a petition to Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen and The United States House of Representatives and The United States Senate, which says:

"Stop tearing children away from their parents. Families belong together."

Will you sign this petition? Click HERE:

Thanks!

Thank you!

Paul often affirmed members of the churches he shepherded by telling them he was thanking God for them. In Philippians 1:3-5 Paul writes, "I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now."

- Thank you to Amy French for all of the hard work that she shares with St. John's.
- Thank you to our dedicated office volunteers, you folks are so important and we value your willingness to help!

Readings
Job 38:1-11

The Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind:
"Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
Gird up your loins like a man,
I will question you, and you shall declare to me.

"Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone
when the morning stars sang together
and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?

"Or who shut in the sea with doors
when it burst out from the womb?—
when I made the clouds its garment,
and thick darkness its swaddling band,
and prescribed bounds for it,
and set bars and doors,
and said, 'Thus far shall you come, and no farther,
and here shall your proud waves be stopped'?"

Psalm 107:1-3, 23-32

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, *
and his mercy endures for ever.
2 Let all those whom the Lord has redeemed proclaim *
that he redeemed them from the hand of the foe.
3 He gathered them out of the lands; *
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
23 Some went down to the sea in ships *
and plied their trade in deep waters;
24 They beheld the works of the Lord *
and his wonders in the deep.
25 Then he spoke, and a stormy wind arose, *
which tossed high the waves of the sea.
26 They mounted up to the heavens and fell back to the depths; *
their hearts melted because of their peril.
27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards *
and were at their wits' end.
28 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
29 He stilled the storm to a whisper *
and quieted the waves of the sea.
30 Then were they glad because of the calm, *
and he brought them to the harbor they were bound for.
31 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his mercy *
and the wonders he does for his children.
32 Let them exalt him in the congregation of the people *
and praise him in the council of the elders.

2 Corinthians 6:1-13

As we work together with Christ, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says,
“At an acceptable time, I have listened to you,
and on a day of salvation, I have helped you.”
See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! We are putting no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see-- we are alive; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.
We have spoken frankly to you Corinthians; our heart is wide open to you. There is no restriction in our affections, but only in yours. In return-- I speak as to children-- open wide your hearts also.

Mark 4:35-41

When evening had come, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
