Pastoral Note:
Mimi Roach, a member of our parish, died Thanksgiving week in her native country of South Africa, at age 95, of complications from pneumonia. Please pray for the repose of her soul and for peace and comfort for her family, especially daughter Molly and grandson Ryan. A service at St. John's is being planned for January 2018. Details will be released when available. May dear Mimi rest in the light of Christ and rise with Him in glory.

Join us for a moving and beautiful start to the season of Advent, with the exquisite sound of the viola da gamba. Music includes works by Ola Gjeilo, Peter-Anthony Togni, responses by John Bertalot, and Advent hymns.
Compline is a 1500-year-old tradition that developed in the early monastic communities. It is the final office of the day in the Christian tradition of canonical hours. “It feels like floating in a bathtub full of warm water and grace.” Come and experience the peace and mystery of this ancient liturgy!

The Whittier "Giving Tree"
Through December 18th
Instead of our annual Book drive, we will be collecting items for the children of the Whittier Pantry. There are 2-4 kids in each family for a total of 50 children. The needs will be presented on a tree in the Rotunda.
Examples of needs are: Children's pajamas, shoes, winter coats
We are asking for new items only.
Please bring the item(s) back to church unwrapped with your tag.

Get Ready for the St. John's Christmas Pageant!
Our annual Christmas pageant is Sunday, December 10th, at the 9:30 a.m. service.
The pageant is one of St. John's most beloved traditions, and it's something your children will remember forever.
Rehearsal and costume distribution is the Sunday before, December 3rd, at 11:30am in the church. Children who want major parts (Mary, Joseph, Gabriel, the star, and the three kings) must attend rehearsal. Parts will be assigned by age, with older children choosing first by 11:45am. If your child wants a major part, please be at rehearsal by that time.Other children will be angels and shepherds.
We will meet in the Nave at 11:30 to try on costumes, assign parts, and do a quick pageant run-through to help everyone know what to expect. Afterward, we invite the youth to join us for a lunch of hot dogs and s'mores. We will finish no later than 1:00pm. Please plan to collect your children from the basement Youth Room (you can park in the parking garage and come in through the door up the ramp).

St John's offers special series: Thursday Afternoon Yoga!
In the gospel of Matthew (6:34) Jesus counsels his friends not to worry about tomorrow, inferring that we are to dwell not in the future nor the past but in the present. Yoga is a great way to practice learning to live in the present, and so we are pleased to offer a special 7-session introductory yoga series at St John's. As we approach the extra-busy holiday season this class is also a terrific way to re-center and re-energize yourself!
Here's what you need to know:
When: Thursdays at 5:00-6:00pm (come to the rotunda door and we'll post the room assignment there)
Dates: Dec 7-14-21-28
Who: This is a drop-in introductory level class, with more challenging pose options offered for levels I and II
Instructor: Sirena Dudgeon, 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher
Cost: $5.00 cash per person per class, payable to the instructor at the beginning of each class
If you come: Wear comfortable clothes that allow movement, and plan to be barefoot. You must bring your own yoga mat. Other props used will be provided.
As a drop-in class you need not attend all dates, however know that each class will to some degree build on the previous one. Also, class size will be limited by the room size so arriving ahead of class start time assures you'll have a spot! Questions? Contact Pastor Susan.

New Opportunities for Men’s Ministry
For well over a year, a group of nine men (all from St. John’s initially) have been gathering together on first and third Tuesdays for breakfast and fellowship. Over time, our fellowship has allowed us to get to know each other, share what’s going on in our personal lives, talk about our spiritual challenges, talk about broader issues in our community and nation, and provide personal support for one another. The experience has been so gratifying and rewarding for everyone that Fr. Ted is starting a second men’s group which will meet at a time and place of mutual convenience.

You are invited to a Festival of Lessons and Carols on Sunday, December 10th at 6pm at St. Aidan's Episcopal Church (2425 Colorado Ave, across from CU Engineering). The preacher will be Bishop Jim Gonia, of the ELCA Lutheran Rocky Mountain Synod, readers are drawn from the CU and Boulder Community. A reception will follow--please come together to pause for music and words of the Advent season.

Saturday Night Bluegrass Worship Service Our Saturday evening worship service begins each week at 5:00pm in the Chapel. Please join us for a contemplative Eucharistic service featuring Americana music with a bluegrass trio. Following the service, enjoy a brief concert and sing-along. This service lasts approximately 40 minutes. All are welcome!
Please note that Saturday evening worship will not occur on the following dates: December 16th (Messiah Sing-Along), December 23rd (Christmas weekend), December 30th (New Year's weekend).
