100 Best Restaurants in Greater Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Years ago an A-list of restaurants would have been a bit redundant - a few steakhouses, a few places with candles, and that was about it. Not anymore. Our 2019 A-List covers quite a bit of ground - not only geographically throughout Northeast Ohio but also in the types of food being prepared and served. From A to Z - arepas to zesty spins on classic dishes - chefs are trying a lot of things in the kitchen. Greater Cleveland culinary offerings range from classic standbys to creative touches.

You can find Asian influences, tasty brewery offerings and quality hotel restaurants. Here are the 100 best restaurants in Cleveland, starting with the Cleveland Classics, our annual list of 20 independently owned and/or locally based dining spots that are perennial favorites known for their exemplary food, service and atmosphere.

Bon appetit.

Cleveland.com’s Marc Bona, The Plain Dealer’s Laura DeMarco and freelance food writers Beth Segal and Alex Darus updated the reviews for the 2019 A-List Dining Guide.

A special shout-out to the late Joe Crea, who help create the A-List as food editor of The Plain Dealer a decade ago. He was essential in keeping it alive when he moved to cleveland.com in 2013. His vision, passion and spirit lives on in this dining guide

El Rinconcito Chapin

El Rinconcito Chapin, 3330 Broadview Rd., Cleveland, 216-795-5776. facebook.com/elrinconcitochapinCLE: This is the kind of small, locally owned corner ethnic restaurant Cleveland has been sorely missing. Guatemalan food tends to be less spicy than the Mexican dishes most Americans are familiar with, and this restaurant was no exception. Corn, beans and chilies are key ingredients in the cuisine that merges Spanish and Mayan roots. It's a culinary culture that makes an impact with nuanced layers of flavor rather than overpowering spice - as does El Rinconcito Chapin in their menu that ranges from seafood to chicken to beef. $-$$. Xinji Noodle Bar

Xinji Noodle Bar, 4211 Lorain Ave., Cleveland, 216-465-2439, xinjinoodle.com:  Slurping is required when eating ramen. The better the big savory bowls of soothing noodle soup, the noisier you should be. The volume trends pretty high here, the ramen is very good. So are a variety of small plates, including crisp-crusted chicken and tender pork buns. Xinji spares no effort to know and control every step of the way to deliver a first-class food experience. They source fresh from local farms and render whole animals into their various parts that flesh out the menu.  Slurp and eat away with confidence, familiarity breeds content on every plate and in every bowl of ramen comfort. $$. All major credit cards.  Cuisine: Asian. (Beth Segal, Special to cleveland.com)
