What is the narrative or inspiration behind your photo series “42 Wayne”?

42 Wayne was the house address where my mom, two sisters, and I lived together after my parents divorced. It was hectic, hormonal, and filled with emotions. It is also where I first began to investigate my relationship to my beliefs and how they were tied to the people I grew up around.

How do you utilize and manipulate shadows to add contrast to your images?

Lighting is persuasive. It keys us in on certain emotions… revealing and exposing details. I think of shadow detail as a metaphor for the quieter moments that fly beneath our radar, the moments we often let escape our memories. Each piece of the photograph is essential if the time to read is given.

What is the significance behind body language and gestures in these photos?

In my work, I gravitate towards the moments we often take for granted, body language, gestures that are performed through generations — the way we hold, touch, and interact with one another teaches us intimacy or lack thereof. It has a different meaning and significance depending on who performs the gesture.

If you could teach a one-hour class on anything, what would it be?

What was the last book you read or film you saw that inspired you?

A short called All These Creatures by Charles Williams. Any book or film that helps you suddenly tune into your senses grabs me. I also watched Wendy, and I found it charming and heartbreaking. The way a child’s imagination and grasp of reality is portrayed really brought me back to my youth. I believe this sense of curiosity and enchantment takes constant practice to hold onto.

What is the most played song in your music library?

“Free Falling” by Tom Petty or “Floe” by Philip Glass. Instant happiness! I first heard “Floe” when I was driving cross country in New Zealand a few years ago, makes me feel free.

How do you take your coffee?

I like my coffee with a little honey and a splash of oat milk!
